The Other Side of Fear

Meredith Andersen

Three times in the last week I said to different people for different reasons, “What you want is just on the other side of fear.” This has become more noticeably true in my life, and other’s lives around me. It seems the fear is usually highlighting exactly what you should be moving toward.

Fear and protecting ourselves is completely natural. We are designed to constantly mitigate risk and analyze what is the safest decision. We look at the majority of folks around us and see where they have had success and stay within the confines of that mold to keep ourselves safe. It’s when we start to think about designing our lives and actually stretching ourselves to obtain our dreams that the fear mongering really rears its ugly head.

Pushing through fear has not come naturally to me, it has happened over lots of time, lots of practice and some insistence from those closest to me. And I still get scared. In fact, I spent most of last Thursday in a fear spiral. I was afraid I bit off more than I could chew by moving my business to our A-Frame (our prominently-located commercial building in our town). I talked myself into a circles “It’s too much expense, I really don’t have time to be a mom and a business owner, I don’t know how all these pieces are going to fit together!”

What became clear after seeking council from my peeps, is that when you look directly at that fear, unpack what is actually scary and move through it, it’s usually not nearly as bad as we make it out to be. And the result is that you get to have, do or be more of what you want.

So on Thursday, I sat down and counted all of my blessings. I really felt pure gratitude for everything I have and have done. I reminded myself that I AM already a mom and entrepreneur. If I move through this fear, sink in and be excited about this big move, it can only bring more business my way, allow me to office in the same building as Tim and serve as a fantastic hub for our lives. Only good can come from this move. Fear just tried to keep me in my comfort zone to protect me.

Sure, feeling safe and comfortable is nice, but what if you shoot higher? Be bolder? Went for something scary that you have always wanted but rationalized away from yourself? Time is going by either way, so why not tell fear to step aside so you can live the life you design.
